How do I set up my first device?

Getting started takes just three steps:

  1. Flash the firmware: Open meshcore.io/flasher in your browser, connect your device via USB, and select the correct model and the desired firmware (e.g., “Companion Bluetooth”). Click “Flash!”—and you’re done.
  2. Install the MeshCore app: Download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Open the app; it will automatically search for Bluetooth devices. Pair your device using the code displayed (if there’s no display: 123456).
  3. Check settings: The LoRa parameters should match the regional network. For Saxony, use the “EU/UK Narrow” preset: frequency 869.618 MHz, bandwidth 62.5 kHz, spread factor 8, coding rate 8.

What LoRa settings do I need for Saxony?

The following settings apply to the Saxony region (preset “EU/UK Narrow”):

These values are preset on most devices after flashing. If the parameters do not match, the devices cannot communicate with each other.

What are regions and scopes?

Regions and scopes limit message distribution to specific areas to prevent network overload. On repeaters, they are called “regions”; on Companions, they are called “scopes.”

If you’re using a Companion in Leipzig, for example, you can set the scope #de-sn-leipzig so that your message is distributed only via repeaters in the Leipzig region. Without a scope, the message could potentially be sent to all repeaters.

For beginners: The scope is optional. Communication still works without a scope—the message is simply distributed more widely. Scopes only become truly important in larger networks.

What channels are available?

In addition to the Public Channel (the default channel for everyone), there are numerous thematic and regional channels. You can find a current overview at https://mesh-sn.de/mitmachen—here are the most important ones:
