MeshCore Splits Following Dispute Over AI Use and Trademark Rights

An internal conflict is rocking the open-source project MeshCore: Disagreements over AI-generated code and a trademark application filed in secret have led to the breakup of the development team.

The development team behind the decentralized communication platform MeshCore announced a split on April 23, 2026. The split was triggered by fundamental differences regarding the use of artificial intelligence in software development, as well as a dispute over control of the brand and project structure.

According to the announcement, a key developer had begun creating large parts of the ecosystem using AI tools while simultaneously attempting to take control of central components such as apps, firmware, and web tools. The rest of the team is particularly critical of the fact that this move was carried out largely without transparent communication.

In addition, a trademark application for “MeshCore”—apparently filed without consultation—exacerbated the conflict. Talks between the parties reportedly failed, and contact has since been completely severed. As a result, the parties are now operating separate platforms and infrastructures.

The project itself had recently experienced strong growth: within about a year, tens of thousands of nodes were established worldwide, along with a six-figure user base. However, the current split could have a lasting impact on further development and the community.

At the same time, new central points of contact for users and developers have been established: Starting immediately, the team will regularly publish changelogs, background articles, and detailed guides on firmware and app releases on the main website, the blog, and in the technical documentation. This is intended, in particular, to enhance transparency toward the community and make the project’s ongoing development traceable.
