What is the difference between a Companion, a Repeater, and a Room Server?
Companion: Your personal device. You use it to send and receive messages. It connects to a smartphone or computer via Bluetooth or USB.
Repeater: An infrastructure node that intelligently forwards messages, thereby extending the network’s range. Repeaters typically run continuously and are self-sufficient (solar-powered). They do not communicate directly with users but instead forward their messages.
Room Server: A type of bulletin board system (BBS). It stores messages and makes them available to users, even if they don’t go online until later. The last 32 unread messages are automatically delivered when a connection is established.
Can I set up a repeater myself?
Yes, and it’s encouraged—every repeater strengthens the network! A simple solar-powered repeater can be built for about €30. You’ll need:
- An nRF-based node (e.g., XIAO nRF52840 + Wio-SX1262 kit)
- A solar panel (5–8 W)
- An MPPT charge controller (CN3791-based)
- 18650 batteries
- A weatherproof enclosure (IP65)

The most important factor is the location: as high as possible and with an unobstructed view in as many directions as possible. A roof, balcony, or tall mast are ideal. The Antenna Coverage Tool in the MeshCore app helps with site planning.
How do I maintain my repeater?
Once properly installed and configured, repeaters operate largely maintenance-free. Using Remote Admin in the MeshCore app, you can check settings, update the firmware (OTA for nRF devices), and monitor the status from any Companion. The only important thing is that the time is set correctly—the easiest way to do this is via the app. For RAK-based devices, an RTC module is recommended.
