Which device should I buy?

That depends on what you plan to use it for. Here’s a guide based on intended use:

For beginners looking for a companion device (mobile device): The Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V4 with Expansion Kit is a reliable and affordable entry-level option (approx. €20–25). It’s based on the ESP32-S3 and features a small OLED display. Connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth; communication takes place through the MeshCore app.

For a standalone device with a keyboard: The LilyGo T-Deck features a 2.8" touchscreen, a physical QWERTY keyboard, and a trackball. This allows you to communicate even without a smartphone.

For a compact tracker: The SenseCAP Card Tracker T1000-E is credit-card-sized, has GPS, and fits in your pocket.

For ready-made handheld devices: The GAT562 Mesh Tracker Pro from MTools Tec comes fully assembled in an injection-molded case with a TFT display, GPS, a joystick, and approximately 7 days of battery life.

For a solar repeater (infrastructure): The XIAO nRF52840 + Wio-SX1262 kit from Seeed Studio is the most affordable foundation for a solar-powered repeater. Together with a solar panel, MPPT charge controller, and 18650 battery, the total cost is around €30.

Important: Make sure to check for the correct frequency band when purchasing. In Germany, the 868-MHz band is used. Devices operating at 915 MHz (North America) will not work here.

Where can I buy these devices?

Most devices are available on AliExpress, Amazon, or directly from the manufacturer. You’ll find direct purchase links for each device on the detail pages of our hardware database. Delivery times from China (AliExpress) are typically 2–4 weeks. If you want to get started sooner, some models are also available from European retailers or Amazon.

Do I also need a smartphone?

For a BLE Companion: yes. The LoRa device sends and receives the radio signals, but you’ll need the MeshCore app on your Android or iOS smartphone to read and write messages. The connection between the device and the smartphone is established via Bluetooth.

Alternatives without a smartphone: A USB Serial Companion can be connected to a computer via a USB cable and operated through the web client (app.meshcore.nz). Standalone devices like the LilyGo T-Deck have a keyboard and display built right in.

How much does it cost to get started?

A basic Companion (e.g., Heltec LoRa 32 V4) costs about €20–25. A complete solar repeater kit costs around €30. Ready-to-use handheld devices like the GAT562 Mesh Tracker Pro cost 80–120 €, depending on the vendor. There are no ongoing costs—no subscription, no server fees, and no internet connection required.
